2. The Patient

Important decisions to be made about your upcoming TKR:

The following questions were foremost in my mind as I accepted the reality of my impending surgery, leaving me to muddle through the preparation and recovery periods as best I could. I am not a healthcare specialist, but I want to reassure the reader that this website has been carefully reviewed by people who are, including physical therapists and an orthopedic surgeon.

In retrospect, had I known at the beginning of the process what I learned by living through it, the journey would have been significantly less stressful and painful. Therefore, I have tried to write the article I wish I could have read before my TKR surgeries. Having answers to these questions would have made My Year of TKR much easier for me. I hope it will do that for you.

•  How do I choose a surgeon when I lack the knowledge to evaluate their performance?

•  TKRs are expensive. How can I pay for everything?

• What can I do to prepare myself mentally and physically for what lies ahead?

•  Aside from medication, are there other items
I can purchase to minimize the pain and help with my recovery?

•  What will Home Health Care do for me?

•  What can I do to optimize healing and minimize pain when I return home?

Can I expect consistent progress as I work toward regaining a full range of motion in my knee?

•  How can I manage the daily fluctuations in physical recovery,
emotional state, and pain level during the first six weeks after surgery?

•  Why is it so difficult to sleep post-surgery?

How can I manage the recovery process to optimize healing  and minimize pain?
